Can Tourists Buy Weed in Nevada?

Yes. Any adult 21 or older can purchase recreational cannabis at any licensed dispensary in Nevada. You do not need to be a Nevada resident, and you do not need a medical marijuana card. All you need is a valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older — a driver's license, passport, or state/military ID from any state or country.

Nevada welcomes over 40 million visitors annually, and the state's cannabis laws were designed with tourists in mind. You have the same purchase and possession rights as Nevada residents.

Purchase and Possession Limits

Out-of-state visitors have the same limits as Nevada residents. As of January 1, 2024 (updated by SB 277):

  • 2.5 ounces (70.88 grams) of cannabis flower
  • 0.25 ounces (7.09 grams) of concentrated cannabis
  • Or an equivalent amount of 7,087 mg of THC in other products (edibles, tinctures, etc.)

These are both daily purchase limits and possession limits. Edibles are capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 100 mg per package.

Out-of-State Medical Cards: Reciprocity

Nevada recognizes out-of-state medical marijuana cards. If you hold a valid medical card from another state, you can purchase medical cannabis at Nevada dispensaries following Nevada's possession limits. This means you can:

  • Access medical-only products (if any are available at a given dispensary)
  • Save on taxes — medical purchases are exempt from the 10% retail excise tax (you still pay standard sales tax of 6.85%–8.375%)
  • Purchase cannabis if you are between 18 and 20 years old (recreational requires 21+)

You do not need to obtain a Nevada medical card to purchase recreational cannabis. The reciprocity provision is an additional benefit for visitors who already hold a card from their home state.

Nevada recognizes out-of-state medical marijuana cards — visitors with valid cards from other states can purchase and possess medical cannabis in Nevada following NV possession limits.

What You Cannot Do as a Visitor

While buying cannabis is easy, there are strict rules about what happens after your purchase:

You Cannot Consume in Public

Public consumption is a misdemeanor — up to $600 fine for a first offense. This includes the Las Vegas Strip, sidewalks, parks, casinos, gaming floors, nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. For full details, see our Where You Can Consume page.

You Cannot Use It in Hotels or Casinos

Nearly all Las Vegas hotels and casinos explicitly prohibit cannabis on their property — including in guest rooms. Violations can result in cleaning surcharges ($250–$500+), fines, or removal from the property without a refund. Do not assume any hotel is cannabis-friendly without checking first.

You Cannot Take It Across State Lines

Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even if you're traveling between two states where cannabis is legal (for example, Nevada to California). This applies to driving, flying, mailing, and shipping. Interstate transport of cannabis violates federal drug trafficking laws regardless of the legal status in either state.

You Cannot Fly With It

Airports are federal property. TSA operates under federal law, and cannabis is illegal at the federal level. While Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas installed cannabis disposal boxes (amnesty boxes) before security checkpoints, bringing cannabis into the airport terminal, through security, or onto an aircraft is a federal violation. Do not attempt to fly with cannabis products — including edibles, vape cartridges, or any THC product.

You Cannot Mail Cannabis

The U.S. Postal Service is a federal agency, and shipping cannabis through the mail is a federal crime. Private carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL) also prohibit cannabis shipments. Do not attempt to mail cannabis products to yourself or anyone else.

Federal Land Is Off-Limits

Cannabis is illegal on all federal property within Nevada, including national parks (Lake Mead, Great Basin), BLM land, military bases, VA facilities, federal courthouses, and post offices. Federal rangers and officers enforce federal law — Nevada's legalization provides no protection on federal land.

The #1 Rule for Visitors

Buy it in Nevada, use it in Nevada, and finish it before you leave Nevada. Do not bring cannabis home with you by any means — driving, flying, or mailing. This is a federal crime regardless of your home state's laws.

If you're new to cannabis, start with Dosing Fundamentals before your first purchase. The 'start low, go slow' approach is especially important for edibles.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Buy near your accommodation. Purchase cannabis close to where you're staying so you can easily return to consume legally on private property (if permitted by your host or rental agreement).
  • Use it before you leave. Plan your cannabis purchases so you can consume everything before your departure. Don't buy more than you can use during your stay.
  • Don't fly with it. Even small amounts. Even edibles. Even vape cartridges. Harry Reid International Airport has amnesty boxes where you can dispose of cannabis before security.
  • Visit a consumption lounge. DAZED! at Planet 13 (2548 W Desert Inn Rd, Las Vegas) is a state-licensed lounge where you can legally consume. Learn more about consumption lounges.
  • Use rideshare, not rental cars. A cannabis DUI in Nevada carries minimum penalties of $400 fine and a 185-day license suspension. Uber and Lyft are widely available. See our DUI & Driving Laws page.
  • Keep your receipt. Your dispensary receipt proves your cannabis was legally purchased in Nevada.
  • Store properly in vehicles. If transporting cannabis in a car within Nevada, keep it in the trunk or glove box — sealed and out of the driver's reach.

Where to Buy: Finding a Licensed Dispensary

Nevada has approximately 109 licensed retail dispensaries statewide — about 79 in the Las Vegas/Southern Nevada area and 30 in Northern Nevada. Always purchase from a CCB-licensed dispensary to ensure product safety and legal compliance.
