Reno & Lake Tahoe Cannabis Guide

Northern Nevada's cannabis scene offers the same legal access as Las Vegas with a more relaxed pace and fewer crowds. Here's what visitors need to know.

Cannabis in Northern Nevada

Everything that is legal in Las Vegas is legal in Northern Nevada. Recreational cannabis is available to all adults 21+ with a valid government-issued photo ID, and the same state laws, possession limits, and consumption rules apply throughout the state. Washoe County (Reno and Sparks) is one of only four Nevada counties that permit recreational cannabis businesses.

What sets Northern Nevada apart is the experience. While Las Vegas draws tens of millions of tourists annually, Reno and Lake Tahoe offer a more laid-back atmosphere with shorter dispensary lines, personal service, and easy access to some of the most beautiful outdoor scenery in the American West.

Dispensaries in Northern Nevada

Northern Nevada has approximately 30 licensed retail dispensaries spread across several communities:

Reno

The largest selection of dispensaries in Northern Nevada. Reno's cannabis retailers are found throughout the city, with a notable concentration in the Midtown district and along major commercial corridors. Many offer online ordering for pickup and some provide delivery services within their licensed zones.

Sparks

The city of Sparks, directly east of Reno, hosts several dispensaries serving the greater Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. Sparks dispensaries are often more accessible for visitors staying on the east side of the metro.

Carson City

Nevada's state capital has a small number of licensed dispensaries. Carson City is also the gateway for visitors heading to Lake Tahoe's Nevada side.

The CCB maintains an official list of all Northern Nevada retail stores with an interactive Google Map at ccb.nv.gov/list-of-licensees.

Verify License Status

Always purchase from CCB-licensed dispensaries. The official list at ccb.nv.gov/list-of-licensees is the only state-maintained, verified source. You can also browse menus on Leafly and Weedmaps, but confirm license status through the CCB.

Purchase Limits

The same statewide limits apply in Northern Nevada as everywhere else in the state. Since January 1, 2024 (SB 277):

  • 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower
  • 0.25 ounces of concentrated cannabis
  • Or an equivalent of 7,087 mg of THC in other products
  • Edibles: 10 mg THC per serving, 100 mg per package

Where to Consume in Northern Nevada

The consumption rules are identical throughout Nevada. You may consume cannabis only on private property with the property owner's permission, or in a licensed consumption lounge.

As of early 2026, there are no state-licensed consumption lounges operating in Northern Nevada. The only active state-licensed lounge is DAZED! at Planet 13 in Las Vegas. However, 21 additional conditional licenses have been issued statewide, so Northern Nevada may see lounges in the future.

Public Consumption Is Illegal Everywhere

Consuming cannabis on streets, sidewalks, parks, in moving vehicles, casinos, hotels, restaurants, bars, or any place open to public view is a misdemeanor — up to a $600 fine for a first offense and $1,000 for a second. This applies in Reno and Sparks just as it does in Las Vegas.

Lake Tahoe: Know the State Line

Lake Tahoe straddles the Nevada-California border, and this matters for cannabis. Key points:

  • Do not transport cannabis across the state line. Carrying Nevada-purchased cannabis into California (or vice versa) is a federal crime, even though both states have legalized recreational cannabis.
  • Federal land surrounds much of the lake. The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is U.S. Forest Service land. Cannabis possession on any federal land can result in federal charges.
  • Nevada-side communities like Incline Village, Crystal Bay, and Stateline are within Nevada jurisdiction and follow Nevada cannabis law.
  • California-side communities like South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City follow California cannabis law, which has different rules and taxes.
Don't Cross State Lines with Cannabis

Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even between Nevada and California, where both states have legal recreational markets. Purchase and consume within the same state.

Outdoor Activities and Cannabis

Northern Nevada visitors often come for skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor recreation. A few important reminders:

  • National forests and federal recreation areas are off-limits for cannabis. This includes much of the land surrounding Lake Tahoe and the eastern Sierra.
  • Nevada state parks are state land, but public consumption is still prohibited.
  • Consume before your activity on private property, not at the trailhead, ski resort parking lot, or beach.
  • Do not drive impaired on mountain roads. Nevada's DUI laws apply regardless of terrain, and mountain driving requires full alertness.

Taxes in Northern Nevada

Cannabis taxes in Northern Nevada include the same 10% retail excise tax and 15% wholesale excise tax (embedded in retail prices) as anywhere in the state. The local sales tax rate in Washoe County (Reno/Sparks) is 8.265%, slightly lower than Clark County's 8.375%. Medical cardholders from any state are exempt from the 10% retail excise tax.

Getting Here

Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) serves the region. As a reminder, all airports are federal property where cannabis possession is illegal. Do not fly with cannabis products. Purchase once you arrive and consume or dispose of products before returning to the airport.
